Your course instructors: Susan Quinlan and Bud Lehnhausen are longtime birders, both with over 50 years of experience finding and identifying birds in diverse habitats from the high arctic to Antarctica. We have taught bird identification classes to both adults and kids and love helping others discover the skills and joys of bird-watching.
Have you always wanted to learn more about our local Colorado birds? What species are around here? How and where can you find them? How can you figure out what bird you are seeing or hearing? Join Susan Quinlan and Bud Lehnhausen this May as they share their photos, knowledge and experiences to kick-start your interest in birds and possibly inspire you to begin a lifetime of birding adventures.
Through a series of interactive slide-illustrated presentations, attendees will begin learning to recognize the silhouettes of common bird groups and become more familiar with several local species in each group. Delight in lots of fun facts about local birds while you begin developing and practicing the observation skills needed to identify a variety of bird species. Discover useful birding resources, (including books and apps), how to use binoculars, learn about some local places to go birding, and field techniques to increase your odds of finding a variety of birds.

Learn what nature-journaling is all about and a variety of ways to approach it. Begin developing the observation skills of a naturalist and start learning to sketch what you see. With coaching and helpful guidance, participants will test out some fun nature observation and sketching techniques that can help anyone start seeing, and enjoying, more in nature. No experience or knowledge of nature or art needed—just bring an interest in learning!

Susan Quinlan is a wildlife biologist, author, and self-taught artist. She has created a wide variety of nature art and illustrations, mostly based on her field observations over the last 40 plus years. Inspired by the nature journals of many artists and the new movement led by John Muir Laws, Susan wants to share this fun art form to encourage others to get outdoors and start noticing, observing and sketching the natural beauty all around us.
Gary Raham is a biologist/author/illustrator who has volunteered for the City of Fort Collins naturalist program for over thirty years. He has taught about making naturalist notebooks and lead many sketching trips along Colorado’s Front Range. He loves to guide artists of varying skill levels to observe nature in all its many forms, and from sizes that range from landscape vistas to the microcosm hiding in a handful of soil.
